A Greater-Than-One-Mile One Mile Walk!!

Yesterday was the 1 or 3 mile Walk To End Alzheimer's out at the community college. All along Mom has been determined to go as long as the weather was good even though neither she nor Dad has been doing much walking for exercise. They had a special surprise when a lot of the family showed up in support of Dad (and Grandpa!). I think our family had as many or more than the whole rest of the Shorewood team!
Tony's app showed 1.2 miles and that wasn't even from the very beginning!
Grandma took off like a bat out of H___ and Grandpa kept looking for Jane. But we caught up where the walk split off and the 3 milers went on.
It looks like a cloudy day in these pictures but it's a good thing it was because when the sun came out it really started to heat up.
There's hardly anyone that isn't affected by Alzheimer's. The four colors in the flower garden represent people that have the disease, caregivers of those with it, people who have lost loved ones to it and people that envision a world without Alzheimer's.
Maybe someday we should be so lucky!!
They told us about an app on your smart phones called Charity Miles. I just looked at it a little bit and it seems you can earn money for a cause courtesy of the sponsors just by choosing your charity and then get on the move. Check it out...it just might work!

What Is August 29th Most Famous For?

Some might answer "hurricane Katrina" but they'd be wrong. That was the day Nephew #2 came along!
Happy birthday, Jon!

A Birth Day

Happy 57th birthday to Jill!
On a rainy day like this I think a movie might be in order!

Been A Busy Week!

Seems like there's always SOMEthing going on! Last Friday I started getting a little crabby ;).
The girls are away on vacation for a week so I'm on hermit crab duty! This is Ruby. But there are three others...Fritzie, Ben and Cammie.
You'd be surprised how they move. (Having a little trouble getting a video to post but try this link). Ruby, Fritzie, Ben and Cammie
Friday night we went for a swim in Kasson.
Monday we golfed in a Paws and Claws benefit at the Rochester Golf and Country Club.
We thought it was a good cause and our only opportunity to golf there. Unfortunately, we learned later that not all that much of the entry fee went to benefit the cats and dogs. They served a terrific meal afterwards but we probably wouldn't do this again.
Wednesday we had our first sweet corn of the season with Mom and Dad...
It was from Cher and Alan's garden and dee-LISH-ous!! There's a reason it's called "sweet"!
That evening we swam in Stewartville with T, T, C and Wee(One)!
Thursday Cher set up a fried zucchini lunch with Mom and Dad in the Activity Room at Shorewood.
First taste of the season for that too but I hope it's not the last!
Friday was our annual trip to Gold Rush in Oronoco to look through other people's trash for a treasure of our own. We didn't have much on the list but came home with a few things that were and some that weren't. There was one sign that really caught our eye but where would we have put it?!
We didn't stay as long as usual this year. For one thing, by the time we left it was 89 degrees with a feel factor of 98. We were whupped!
So one more thing for the day and that was Tony's play, Brigadoon, in Stewartville.

Big week for us old gals. Let it be said, I'm looking forward to Fall...a little cooler and maybe not so busy!

Tri-ed It And Musta Liked It!

Five years ago the Rochester Eco-Tri was started and the boys have been participating ever since! Yesterday was the 2015 version. Brian brought their friend, Dave, along too.
No shortage in the cheering section.

The kayaking...

...and biking came first.
But I think it was probably a relief when they finally ran through the finish line!
Good job, boys!!!
Looking just as fresh as at the start! :)

93!

It's a good thing somebody's having a birthday or I wouldn't take the time to put up a post! I'm very bad at blogging lately but I have my reasons. No way will I ever catch up but I still have plans to get going again. So...after that little rant....it's my dad's 93rd birthday today!
Going for a fancy lunch at McDonald's! Cake and ice cream after. Happy birthday, Dad!

Short Update

A couple weeks ago Mom suffered a very painful compression fracture in her back, spent a few days in the hospital and then moved up to Fairview Care Center in Dodge Center for a little rehab. We kids were having to stay with Dad in their apartment at Shorewood so now he and Mom are roommates again up in DC. All that shuffling around was throwing Dad for quite a loop! Hoping in three weeks or so that we can move them back to Shorewood but into an assisted living apartment just down the hall from where they were. We took the opportunity yesterday to sneak in a round of golf at the Country Club that borders Fairview before visiting them. Mom was up for a short walk and has been doing pretty well.
She gets tired but I think it's because the therapy department is keeping her busy! They complain of having "too much food!" but Dad eats everything they put in front of him!

The Big Red Ball

The RedBall Project came through town this week. The only day Jill and I could go to see it was Wednesday when it was on this silly little side street and just sorta stuffed into a garage.
It's a fun idea but I think the locations that were closer to downtown were probably a lot more impressive. Good thing Grandpa and Grandma opted out of going with us. They would have been wondering, what the....?!
Oh, by the way...the reason there was only that one day for us to see it was because (you may have guessed) Jill's off on another excursion. She's flown out to California again but back on Monday!

Kid Katch Up!

I am, admittedly, pretty lax on any blog posts lately. Oh, you didn't notice? I didn't think so. But anyway...here is just a little update on what the kids are looking like these days...
(Natalie)
(Harvey)
(Maya)
(Charlie)
(Claire)
(Cate)
and our two little neighbor girls who are getting a little sister in just a couple of weeks.
(Alaina)
(Sarina)
There have been dance recitals, track meets, school programs, birthday parties and all sorts of just becauses. Almost too many to keep track of! I've got pictures. I'm just not very good lately at getting around to sharing them.

Getting Used To A New Bad Boy

We've had one Toro push mower or another for 12 years with personal pace technology...which means, basically, that it's got a power drive but it only goes as fast as you're walking. Last week we got a new Ariens mower that's still self-propel but almost has a mind of it's own! If you're not careful how hard you squeeze the power assist lever you'll be running to catch up!
And after an hour of squeezing that lever several times a week (with all this rain!) I wonder if we'll end up with Popeye arms!

Entering A New Category, I Guess!

Yesterday we had a fella come that's going to do some handyman things for us. He's a talker. And in the course of telling a couple stories about jobs he's done he happened to mention about 90 "other little old ladies" that he does work for. I like the "little". Not certain about the "old"! Kidding....he's 77 so what's he talking about!

An Anniversary Of Sort

May 2nd, 2013. Who doesn't remember that?! 15" of heavy, wet snow.
But it was also the day Mom and Dad moved into Shorewood. We celebrated last year with a snowman cake from HyVee. This year was such a contrast we had a picnic lunch and hike down at Carley State Park.
The Bluebells were prolific in spots!
Some nice couple came by and offered to shoot us all...so we took them up on it!
Mom and Dad's move into town may have been an inauspicious start but I think we all agree they're right where they should be at this stage of their lives!
